How We Approach Content at Roku

At Roku, we love television. As one of the largest streaming destinations for entertainment and news, we offer customers access to thousands of streaming apps and more than a half million free and paid movies and TV shows.

Our goal, as always, is to build a streaming experience that includes many forms of artistic expression, ideas, perspectives, and voices. While our slogan is “Happy Streaming,” we know everyone has a different view on what that means. Today more than ever, individuals, organizations, communities, and even countries will disagree on what’s appropriate or interesting to watch. As a company providing a platform for enormous amounts of content, we take into consideration what’s best for our business, our publishers, our advertisers, and our tens of millions of customers around the world.

While we retain the right to remove a streaming app from our platform, it is exceptionally rare, and we are not able to screen, curate, or remove individual content from inside streaming apps. Each app or streaming service is responsible for its own content.

While some types of content on our platform require distinct policies, all our content policies share the following basic principles.

For Streaming Apps on The Roku Platform
The Roku Streaming Store distributes an array of streaming apps from thousands of third-party publishers.
  • We support choice and believe customers should decide what they want or don’t want to watch, as well as what’s appropriate for the interests and preferences of their households.
  • We open our streaming TV platform to the greatest amount of content possible to captivate a wide range of global viewers. While we do not manage publisher content, including live content, it must adhere to our guidelines and app criteria.
  • We prohibit illegal content, pornographic channels, and copyright infringement on our platform, and provide guidelines for content developers to require compliance with our standards.
For The Roku Channel and Roku Originals
Roku offers free and premium content inside The Roku Channel. The Roku Channel is our primary home for free content, including new movies and television shows that we commission and distribute as Roku Originals. The Roku Channel also offers viewers the opportunity to watch live programming and subscribe directly to a variety of paid streaming services, both of which are programmed by third parties.
  • For the content inside The Roku Channel, we offer parental settings and content ratings for different maturity levels.
  • For Roku Originals, we aim to produce entertaining and relatable series from a diverse range of voices.
  • For paid subscriptions and linear channels that can be accessed through The Roku Channel, we aim to offer a variety of viewing options, but we do not manage content on these services.
For Advertising on Roku
Several types of ads can appear on the Roku platform.
  • Ads sold by third-party streaming apps are solely managed by those apps and not generally screened or approved by Roku. Each streaming app is responsible for following Roku’s ad guidelines.
  • Ads for third party products or services that appear on The Roku Channel or the Roku platform, including advertising that appears throughout our menus and navigation screens, are sold as ad inventory and are not endorsements by Roku. These ads are also subject to the same guidelines we provide directly to advertisers.
  • Ads produced through the Roku Brand Studio are subject to the same ad guidelines.
Roku periodically updates our content policies, and we strive to continually delight streamers around the world with entertainment that is easy to access and engaging. Our selection of TV shows and movies, along with corresponding maturity ratings or advertising rules, may change in each country where we operate.
